Job Summary
Provides direct and
indirect age-specific patient care services for assigned patients at the
Emergency Department per scheduled shifts within the framework of Patient
Centered Care (PCC). Performs nursing duties that meet the physical,
psychosocial, cultural, and general needs of the patient and family, while
maintaining institutional requirements, nursing and hospital policies,
procedures and standards. Communicates with the Registered Nurse about changes
in patient’s clinical condition based on assessment within the scope of
practice. Obtain 12-Leads EKG when applicable and perform specimen collection.
Abides by Joint Commission International (JCI) requirements, including but not
limited to International Patient Safety Goals, national and international
standards.
Supports the mission and vision of the American University of
Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) and the Nursing Services
Department.
Essential Functions / Task Groups
Age-Specific Patient Centered Care :
- Assume all functions pertinent to a Practical Nurse.
- Assist with the admission, transfer or discharge of patients
- Prioritize care based on medical and nursing diagnosis, patient history,
and expected patient outcomes.
- Demonstrate ability to set goals, anticipate problems, and achieve quality
results.
- Contribute to and participate in the implementation of a planned care for
assigned patients based on their needs and according to the institution
standards of care and practices.
- Monitor medical condition and emotional stability of patients and report
changes to the staff nurse.
- Provide basic life support when needed. It includes performing
ambu-bagging, chest compression, and applying defibrillator/ cardiac monitor
leads and oxymeter.
- Demonstrate competence in assisting in diagnostic procedures and carrying
out nursing treatments.
- Obtain 12-leads EKG when applicable.
- Provide patient with appropriate nutrition, including enteral feeding.
- Assist in delivering pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
- Assist physicians with procedures such as LP, bone marrow aspiration,
chest tube insertion, suturing, etc.
- Demonstrate required therapeutic skills. It includes checking ordered
oxygen therapy modality including the mechanical ventilator setting, preparing
and assisting in change of dressing, removal of pressure dressing, closing and
opening ventriculostomy before and after positioning.
- Assist in changing adhesive tape of endotracheal tube.
- Maintain a closed wound drainage system.
- Document all relevant interventions in the nursing medical records
according to hospital and departmental manuals.
- Accountable for the
use of patients’ and hospital resources.
- Assume
responsibility for meeting JCI required mandatory education, e.g., fire,
safety, infection control and others.
Specimen Collection:
- Demonstrate a practical experience or skill in performing blood collection
techniques such as venipuncture, heel stick and finger stick; describe the
main superficial veins used in performing venipunctures; identify appropriate
sites for heel stick, finger stick and venipuncture; identify the various
types of anticoagulates, preservatives and gels used in blood collection and
the vacuum tube color code for the additives; identify the type of
preservatives used in 24 hours urine collection gallons.
- Demonstrate a practical knowledge in identifying the most common
complications associated with heel stick, finger stick and venipuncture; their
causes, prevention and treatment within expected capabilities.
- Adhere to safe and efficient work practices in collection and processing
of specimens i.e. maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the
test to be performed; labeling specimens accurately and completely; collecting
timed specimens and timely delivery/distribution of specimens to laboratory
sections.
Equipment & Supplies Management:
- Operate all required unit equipment(s) safely: Bedside and portable
monitor, heat lamp, portolift, weight scale, Doppler, EKG machine, glucometer,
Bear Hugger, Primo Mattresses and oxymeter.
- Assist in maintaining an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning
of equipment.
- Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according
to specific product information and standards of care and practice manuals.
- Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining, returning and disposing of
equipment and supplies.
- Check sterile sets every shift.
- Handle contaminated sets according to hospital policy.
- Disinfect trays and carriages according to hospital approved
disinfectants.
- Report any broken/malfunctioning equipment to the Staff Nurse.

Education:
Minimum Education: Practical Nurse Diploma or BT Nursing.
Field of Expertise: Clinical Nursing.
Experience:
Minimum Experience: 2 years as practical nurse with preferred
phlebotomy certification.
Preferred Experience: In related field of
experience.
Languages:
Minimum
Languages: Arabic and English (EET >/= 500)
Preferred
Languages: French is an asset.
Computer Skills:
Basic knowledge in use of Microsoft Office Applications.
