The Hematology has an opening for the position of Medical Laboratory Technologist - Clinical Hematology in grade 9. Basic Functions
Perform all laboratory routine and special procedures in a prompt, accurate and reliable manner to provide the most accurate diagnosis of patient diseases according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Assist in the application of accreditation requirements, safety regulations and equipment maintenance.
Support the mission and vision of the American University of Beirut Medical Center and that of the Department.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Lab Technology
  • Working experience as Medical Lab Technologist is preferred.
  • Strong command of Arabic and English (IET score =/> 500).
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and ability to interact with laboratory information system (LIS) and/or hospital information system (HIS) computer functions as it relates to the testing and reporting area.
  • Work Schedule: Shift Basis and/or On-Call

Job Summary

Essential Functions / Task Groups

Data Entry & Specimen Receipt:

  • Ensure specimen integrity by adhering to the laboratory’s procedures
  • Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis results, reporting and maintaining records of patient results
  • Ensure relevant information is on the requisition received with the test request
  • Utilize job knowledge, judgment and problem solving skills to ensure specimen quality by following established policies and procedures for quality control performance, quality assurance documentation, and safety
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in statistical data gathering and reporting
  • Demonstrate knowledge and ability to interact with laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) computer functions as it related to testing and reporting area

Testing Management:

  • Exhibit basic knowledge of professional ethics, and standard Laboratory practices throughout preanalytical, analytical and post analytical performance
  • Prepare specimens for analysis, e.g., cytospin, centrifuging, aliquoting, preserving
  • Prepare slide for all samples, staining, special stains for BM
  • Perform differential count on bone marrow and peripheral blood especially for low counts.
  • Perform parasitic identification such as Malaria and Filaria
  • Utilize technical skills and abilities to perform all tests in simple and moderate complexity testing
  • Operate & troubleshoot test systems (pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical)
  • Follow the established guidelines and protocols for test reporting and procedures, e.g. reporting of critical values with compliance to “read back” policy, proper reporting of stat values, recognition and reviewing of departmental testing logs for completeness of testing requests
  • Identify problems which may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and take appropriate action including supervisory notification if indicated
  • Correlate appearance and numbers of cells with instruments results (indices, counts and histograms/scattergrams)
  • Prepare reticulocyte count stain, dilutions and smears, and perform count
  • Prepare diluent, CSF and body fluid dilutions for hemocytometer count
  • Prepare stains and adequately stain peripheral blood film
  • Evaluate suitability of films
  • Evaluate results based on patient diagnosis, treatment, previous results and other Hematology results as required and respond immediately
  • Perform a variety of Flow Cytometry procedures including Lymphocyte subset analysis, Leukemia immunophenotyping and stem cell analysis
  • Recognize and resolve out of control scenarios by following established protocols
  • Recognize and investigate the adverse effects of lab procedures according to established protocol and initiate follow-up action as required
  • Initiate follow-up procedures where necessary for patient well-being before reporting results
  • Take ownership of assignments and demonstrate concern about the result
  • Perform competency and proficiency challenges in a timely and acceptable manner
  • Apply health and safety measures at all times to ensure the safety and protection of patients, colleagues, self and the environment
  • Follow all safety, infection control and blood borne pathogen guidelines
  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance programs
  • Communicate information regarding laboratory analyses to clients in an appropriate timely manner
  • Practice effective communication with colleagues, patients, students, clients, and other health professionals while maintaining a professional attitude
  • Perform Quality Control procedures as job requires and report quality control failures to support personnel for corrective action.
  • Correlate all laboratory findings to aid in interpretation

Equipment and Supplies Management:

  • Perform and document scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance
  • Operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, keyboards, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual, automated pipettes and stainers
  • Responsible for the performance and completion of defined equipment and instrument maintenance documents
  • Follow the recommended manufacturer and/or department defined instrument set up procedures prior to testing
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve instrument malfunctions to assure the real time availability of equipment
  • Utilize responsible practices which contribute to the cost-effective use of health care resources
  • Report failures to support personnel for corrective action

Administrative Issues:

  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in inter and intradepartmental committees
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in procedure manual updating processes
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate and share ideas for Performance Improvement projects
  • Assist in providing the performance of accreditation developments related to test methodology

Impact of Actions / Decisions
­Error in conducting test analyses or in reviewing work would probably be caught by review within the laboratory or by review of test results and reports. However, not all work is technically checked so unreliable results may cause material or financial loss and may affect the diagnosis of the patient and consequently on the treatment and the quality of patient care reflecting adversely the laboratory
­Accurate work performed facilitates the work of others within the immediate organizational unit and provide timely services
