The N. K. Basile Ambulatory Chemotherapy Unit has an opening for the position of Nurse Manager above grade 12. Basic Functions

Responsible and accountable for an assigned unit 24 hours a day in alignment with the organizational values and goals. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, supervising and evaluating the delivery of patient centered care established within the institution's policies, procedures, guidelines and standards of professional nursing practice. Foster a professional environment and a culture where interdisciplinary team members contribute to optimal patient outcomes. Coordinate the care needed for a patient with different disciplines. Duties include but are not limited to: managing operational, human, financial and other resources; professional development of oneself and subordinates; involvement in strategic planning and fostering interdisciplinary and collaborative relationships. Participate in planning activities to promote Magnet standards in the Nursing Services Department. Enforce Joint Commission International (JCI) requirements, including but not limited to International Patient Safety Goals, national and international standards.
Support the mission and vision of the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) and the Nursing Services Department.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Master's Degree in Nursing or healthcare related field is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience as Registered Nurse, preferably 2 years of which are supervisory.
  • Lebanese Nursing Colloquium, Nursing License from the Ministry of Public Health, Member of the Order of Nurses in Lebanon, and a Membership in a professional nursing organization are required.
  • Strong Command of Arabic and English (EEE >/= 500). French is an asset.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Work Schedule: Regular weekdays

Essential Functions / Task Groups

Clinical Practice/Knowledge/Technology:

  • Utilize the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as the foundation for nursing practice.
  • Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, analyzing appropriate internal and external data and information to identify opportunities in collaboration with stakeholders for improving services and patient outcomes.
  • Ensure the delivery of quality care to patients and families.
  • Promote inter and intra-professional communication and collaboration.
  • Promote and monitor regulatory standards and customer service expectations for the practice of all aspects of nursing.
  • Promote principles of evidence based practice to improve practice.
  • Base decisions and actions on ethical principles and foster a non-discriminatory climate in which care is delivered in a manner sensitive to socio-cultural diversity.
  • Promote research, and integrate evidence-based knowledge in the delivery of nursing care to the appropriate population.
  • Ensure smooth application of AUBHealth into patient care practices
  • Utilize information systems to support managerial decisions related to clinical care, human resources, operations and finance.
  • Ensure delivery of safe patient care during planned and unplanned downtimes.
  • Ensure the availability and accessibility of paper-based downtime forms to be used for documentation once the system is down.

Strategic Management:

  • Participate actively in the implementation of the electronic health record AUBHealth. Identify risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Participate actively in the implementation of automating the medication management process including Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) and barcode scanning systems.
  • Participate actively in the design and construction of new facilities at AUBMC.
  • Ensure proper training of staff on the use of electronic health record; AUBHealth, ADCs and other IT health systems.
  • Assess readiness for change and involve staff in change processes.
  • Communicate changes to staff and evaluate outcomes.
  • Coordinate and manage projects as requested.

Human Resources Management:

  • Responsible for the management of the human resources through recruiting, selecting, orienting and training nursing staff in collaboration with the Human Resources Department and Clinical and Professional Development Center (CPDC).
  • Responsible for hiring, firing, setting developmental plans, recognizing and awarding staff in collaboration with the Human Resources Department and Clinical and Professional
  • Development Center.
  • Develop an annual staffing plan after assessing the unit’s needs and evaluating the staffing patterns.
  • Analyze workloads and skills’ requirements to meet patient care needs.
  • Maintain nursing staff performance results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff performance based on professional practice standards and organizational criteria; identify areas of strength as well as areas for professional practice development.
  • Monitor staff satisfaction; develop and implement strategies to address satisfaction issues.
  • Promote professional development of staff.
  • Facilitate staff education and assess learning needs; ensure competency validation.
  • Identify educational needs and coordinate with the CPDC to develop education programs designed to assist the Registered Nurse in the progression from novice to expert in the practice of nursing.
  • Develop and monitor programs in collaboration with other disciplines.
  • Support participation in outreach activities that provide visibility to the community.

Operational and Financial Management:

  • Responsible for planning, creating, utilizing, analyzing and monitoring the unit budget..
  • Prepare minor, capital and operational budgets.
  • Monitor and analyze staffing expenses; nursing hours per patient days budgeted versus nursing hours per patient days, actual skill mix of Registered Nurses versus assistive personnel.
  • Monitor and analyze overtime & straight time hours.
  • Maximize care efficiency and throughput.
  • Ensure availability and operation of necessary equipment and supplies for patient care.
  • Oversee the inventory of unit supplies and monitor usage reports.
  • Ensure that supplies and procedures are properly charged by nursing staff and minimal losses are incurred.
  • Ensure the usage of charge capture forms when charging supplies during downtimes.
  • Monitor and promote workplace safety requirements.

Performance Improvement Management:

  • Conduct performance improvement audits to improve the practice.
  • Perform environmental and safety rounds to meet JCI requirements.
  • Ensure proper implementation of all the JCI, Magnet and CAP standards as well as standardizing all processes to meet policies and JCI requirements.
  • Oversee compliance with required documentation through the use of Manager reports of AUBHealth.
  • Monitor patient satisfaction survey results and develop strategies to address issues.
  • Interpret and communicate to staff members all changes in standards of care, nursing practice, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure proper implementation of standards of care and practice.
  • Oversee the implementation of continuous quality monitoring parameters to ensure patient safety.
  • Appraise nurses on quality and safety standards.
  • Communicate and document pertinent incidents, actions, and follow-up with the Nurse Leader in a timely manner.
